Faded Memories
You must have heard hostel life is amazing. Of course it is. It wasn't the first time when i was going to live in hostel. Before that I had lived in Kota. My journey started from 21st of July 2013 when i got NIT Durgapur in third counseling for JEE-Mains. I went to Delhi by train and then to Kolkata by air, reached Durgapur in the evening of 22nd. It was a quite different traveling experience for me as I was all alone. My cousin had advised my father not to assist me in my journey. He told me all about the college life that he could from his own experience. I went all the way to Durgapur and reached there late night. From Kolkata i went by train. Stayed in lodge because there were no good hotels and Next day i went to NIT Durgapur. Before i left for NIT my father called me and told me about one more round of counseling. After visiting campus of NIT Durgapur and staying there for about a week i wanted to go to some other NIT. That college was really bad. Finally I got NIT Kurukshetra in the last round of counseling. As result was declared I booked the first train I could find to Delhi.
It was 31st of july when i reached Kurukshetra. I entered to college from 3rd gate of Kurukshetra University. It was very beautiful. Specially after what i had seen in NIT Durgapur, it was a heaven to me. I was late for the admission and registration process, so I stayed with my friend Praveen for the night as he had already joined the college.
Starting next day i started taking classes. First month of first year was quite amazing. Everyone feels that way. You are open to everything. There are no restrictions except the hostel timings. One gets chances to meet a lot of good batch-mates and good seniors. First senior whom i met was Surbhi ma'am. She is my friend's cousin, Kartikeya, who became my friend in an exchange program. We heard about GT here, i.e. get together, a group of student who are from same states like RGT refers to Rajasthan GT, UPGT , MGT -Meena GT, KKRGT-Kurukshetra GT etc etc. GT's are just for the interactions with new juniors and keep the maximum post of clubs and societies to their state students i.e. Jugaad everywhere. In RGT i had my first interaction with Pawan Regar sir. He was very humble person. I never felt that I'm talking to a senior while talking to him. When 2nd year was interacting with first year then i met one other person. He was Hardik Singhal. Of he was a senior and later he became pac member of his branch. His behavior was not good while interacting. After talking to him i never wanted to be in GT. Some of my friends tried to convince me but i denied. But yes Hardik sir was a man of full confidence. Ragging is banned in whole country and strict rules are there, but GT members have to go through it. Ragging is somewhat necessary until its for torture. It opens up people. Even some professors have also accepted that.
Since blog is titled as Neutrally NIT Kurukshetra so I'll share both positive and negative about college. Best thing about this college is infrastructure. Even first year hostels are better than most of the IIT's and NIT's. Roads are best, as they are national highways. Classrooms are good expect some of them need good ventilation, specially in electrical block where exhaust fans are fitted without removing glass in front of them. Truth is, after four years you'll find that no one had studied anything great no matter which college he is from. In the end infrastructure of your campus is the only thing that makes you love your college. Sports complex is large enough. In last three years, ever since permanent sports teacher were appointed, facilities are improved. Last Director wasn't good from students point of view. Because he never gave his time to students. Now our new Director Shri Satish Kumar is a great person and has a great personality . He visited most of the college and hostels within a week of his joining. Students can meet him whenever they want. He visited every possible classroom to ask students what could they improve. We had a dream of take a bath in swimming pool which was not started since constructed. He started it within 8 months of joining .
If i talk about education system. It is student oriented not career oriented. Professor's of some of the department are very good and some aren't. Actually students don't want to study so teachers also don't take interest in teaching. I'm a civil engineering student and civil department in NIT Kurukshetra is far better than any other department. All the teachers are PhD from IITies or some foreign university. Some of best professors are Prof Mahesh Pal, Prof SN Sachdeva, Prof Baldev Setia, Prof Ashwini Jain and Prof Anupam Mittal. They are the people who made my interest in civil engineering and it is same for most of the students. Most of the teachers are not supportive here. Of course they have power to do take any action against student if he does anything wrong but I've heard some of such cases.
If i come to clubs and societies there were 3 major clubs Music and Dramatics (MAD), Student Activity Club (SAC) and Photography Club (Photog). Later Photography club was divided into two parts Photography club and NIT's Tilted Tripod (NTT). Except these are are 5-more clubs are there. Each branch here in college has a society for eg Civil has Infrastructures, Electrical has E-Rec, Electronics - Microbus CS and IT has Technobyte and Mechanical and PIE has Mechsoc. Life of clubs seems good in first year and second year. When students get know about their position where they stand now in their branch then they realize the what had they done with the precious time they had. Clubs are literally waste of time because there is too much rush in every club. Societies ain't creative enough. Don't know why technical fests of college are not interesting and are not even able to attract student to participate in technical events. Club and society parties are center of smoking, drinking. Recently some of students were caught on Dayalpur theka, that was really bad. Lot of girls were caught drunk. Later their parents were called. Of course your age and time allows you to do what you want to do, you are free to drink but not during college hours. Even it is not legal in Haryana. Did anyone feel proud to call their parents while they were caught ?
Best thing for foodie people is you can never sleep hungry if you have money in your pocket. Some of Khokha ( Dhaba are locally called Khokha here ) serve anything to eat till 4 am. Bad part is that now a people are supplying weed ( gaanja and some other things ) at the hostel gate. NIT administration is not aware of that. Even our govt is not aware of that how much worse the conditions are. Students are getting addicted very badly and in the last four years it has been spread mostly all over the India. Some of friends in IIT Delhi and some from Jaipur, also said that weed is very easily available here.
One of the most important thing in college life is Senior-Junior relationship. It is truth that some final year students have their eyes on first year girls. But best thing is that sometimes you may find a good senior or good junior and that will make you college life best. My best senior was Manish Sevta sir and my team The Rebels had all my favorite juniors. He did a lot for us. Seniors always cares for their juniors but they also expect some respect from juniors. Most of your problems can be resolved with their help. By the way not every senior is good specially who ask you to smoke. In some of GT's because of such seniors, juniors are getting addicted to weed smoke. GT's are also the place where you would find great people. I've heard a lot about Chirag Kanwariya sir, Nakul Pathak sir, Ankit Jain sir. Kunal Sahi sir was the person or senior we could have. And in the same batch a senior named Puneet from civil, i hated him. Of course i was not in GT but Parth was one of the person i met in college. He made me play badminton. I was supported by Himanshu, Bhargawa and Arihant also.
Those who never lived out of home and coming for the first time may complaint about mess food. But neutrally mess food is good. Of course what they are charging is more. They are charging miscellaneous to pay salary of mess workers. That costs more to the students. Electricity is available for 24 hours. Library and CCN are open for 24 hours and that is best what you can get from your college.
Security system is good in NIT. But these people ain't supportive to students. Sometimes they deliberately create problems for students. They have power but sometimes they do as they wish just to disturb children. Let me tell you what happened 2 weeks ago. Bahubali-2 was released. Due to practical exams at the same time most of the students had their tickets in 10:45's show. We reached at the gate at 10:03. Gate timings to go out was 10'o clock. Almost 50 students were there at gate who were not more than 5 minute late, but no one was allowed to go out. Later 2-3 students were allowed to go. They don't think logically. We also called Prof HD chalak from Civil department who was our hostel warden, if he will help us the. When he talked to in-charge of security and security in-charge said he is security supervisor then Chalak sir replied its a wrong no. I was shocked. I was not expecting this from my professor. Later i called chief warden. He said he is out of station and he can not give permission now. I was sure he said this because he didn't want us to go. I thought i should take this to director sir to tell him how our professors responded. But i was afraid of not getting my degree. So i left it.
I came to campus on 31st of July and took admission on 1st august. From the first day, I did my first and last dance performance in OAT (Freshers and Confluence 2k13), i started writing blogs, learned to play flute, badminton and a lot more, till last day. Last exam was of Finite Element Method on 15th of May. I left college on 17th May 2017. Everyone was going home. The same day Sagar Rana and Narendra Patidar left for home at 2 pm who were close friends and that made me blank. Later in the evening when i was leaving Vishal, Ranjeet, Vijay and Karan came with me to market, where i met other friends ans juniors. Kuldeep, Indrajeet, Deepak and Parul ma'am were already there. Mamta was also there with her parents so met them also. Later Sachin aka R@#@#, Kartik, Akshat, Tanmay, Sonu and Priya came to say sayonara. I hugged everyone as it was last hug. Cab arrived, luggage was loaded in cab. That was quite special time, when i hugged everyone again and they were not letting the cab go, but it was time to leave. I asked juniors to study hard. I wished for all them to be happy. It was their love which made my college life great. Finally i asked my cab driver to move on. Car started 20 hands were waving off to say good bye. I was looking at them them out of window when car was moving. Street light, dark sky and greenery around made it an end like a movie. Felt like it was a dream and it ended. Of course it was dream which i want to live again and again.
That's my story. Thank you for reading it. If you like it please share it 😛.
Thank you.
